Every year, thousands of seafarers arrive in New England’s ports, working tirelessly aboard cruise ships that bring joy to passengers but often leave crew members isolated and far from home. The New England Seafarers’ Mission (NESM) serves as a beacon of hope and hospitality for these hardworking individuals, offering a welcoming space, spiritual support, and essential resources. As we prepare for our 2025 Cruise Ship Ministry season, we invite you to join us in making a real difference in the lives of those who spend months at sea.

Why Volunteer?

1. Provide Comfort and Connection Seafarers face long contracts, grueling work hours, and time away from their families. NESM provides a vital support system, offering a home away from home. As a volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to engage with crew members, provide a listening ear, and foster meaningful connections.

2. Make a Tangible Impact Whether you’re distributing care packages, helping seafarers access Wi-Fi to connect with loved ones, or offering transportation to local stores, your time and efforts will have a direct and lasting impact on those who often feel invisible.

3. Share Hope and Faith Many seafarers seek spiritual support, encouragement, and a place of safety. Volunteers who are comfortable sharing their faith can participate in prayer groups, distribute inspirational materials,become angels of grace and mercy by being present, or simply offer words of encouragement.

Ways to Get Involved

We welcome individuals, church groups, and community organizations to contribute in a variety of ways:

  • Crew Market Hospitality: Greet seafarers, offer refreshments, and create a warm, welcoming environment.
  • Check-out Stations: Help seafarers purchase toiletries, snacks, and clothing.
  • Mailroom Assistance: Process seafarers parcels into our mailroom, and assist seafarers with processing package pick-up.
  • Money Transfer: Assist with the processing of crew members money transfers to their family and loved ones.
